What the data reveals

The AI-lab landscape is a capital pyramid. The eleven leading foundation-model companies have raised about $370.9bn in equity between them, and just two — OpenAI ($182.8bn) and Anthropic ($139.4bn) — account for roughly 87% of it. Frontier AI is the most capital-intensive frontier in technology, and the capital is astonishingly concentrated.

It is also overwhelmingly American. US-based labs (3 of the 7) have raised about $359.2bn; China's 3 leading labs about $8.7bn — a gap of roughly 41× that mirrors the national investment picture. DeepSeek's rise shows Chinese labs can reach the frontier on a fraction of the capital, but the funding centre of gravity sits firmly in the US.

Valuations have detached from revenue at the very top. OpenAI is valued at about 21.3× its estimated annualised revenue and Anthropic at 20.5× — multiples that price in years of expected growth, not current sales. These are the numbers a bubble debate is built on.

The efficiency story hides in revenue per employee. Anthropic leads at about $16m of annualised revenue per employee — a figure that dwarfs almost any traditional software company and explains why a few hundred people can support a hundred-billion-dollar valuation.

Methodology & verification

Ranked by total equity funding — the single cleanest, most reliable figure — from Epoch AI's Data on AI Companies (CC BY 4.0). Valuation is the latest dated post-money valuation from a funding round; estimated annualised revenue and staff count are the latest dated reports Epoch holds, each with a confidence rating (Confident/Likely). We publish only dated figures and never infer a 'current' number from an undated series. Revenue per employee is derived (latest revenue ÷ latest staff). Company country is the parent organisation's nationality. Nothing is estimated by Affärslivet beyond that derived ratio. Confidence: High on funding, Medium on revenue/valuation (labs are private and disclose selectively).
